For this work, Yasmin Smith conducted substantial research into the hydrological and ecological systems of the Seine. She collaborated with local ecology experts, arborists and community organisations involved in vegetation protection, land restoration, environmental assessment and education, to collect specimens and make ceramic replicas. The glaze of the resulting sculptures is made from the ashes of the original flora samples. The glaze preserves the inorganic components present in the plant (e.g. metal oxides, silica, aluminum) and reveals them visually. These elements present the memory of the plant, recounting the history of the soil and the water that nourished it.
On 7 November Yasmin Smith will present a talk on Seine River Basin, followed by a ceramic workshop on 9 November at the Cité internationale des arts.
