Dimitar Solakov juxtaposes the video documentation of two different walks in urban and rural spaces. On the left, a crowd marches in a political protest in Sofia. In the summer of 2013, a series of intense demonstrations took place in the Bulgarian capital, concentrating hopes for social and political transformation but only resulting in a temporary triumph before the election of a populist government. On the right, the artist documents a solitary walk along a dry stream bed in a forest near his house. Focusing on the act of walking, Dimitar Solakov explores the political significance of the two perambulations and the elements that subtend urban and rural spaces.
His father, prominent conceptual artist Nedko Solakov, chose a series of drawings in counterpoint to what Dimitar explores in response to the political situation in the country. Nedko’s practice embraces storytelling and aphorism to highlight neglected corners of existence. He humorously exposes existential questions and the absurdity of life and politics.
