Simón Vega creates sculptural installations inspired by the self-made vendor carts of El Salvador, the tianguis. His works ironically merge the aesthetics of the so-called ‘first’ and ‘third’ worlds and draw from the high-tech imaginary of the Cold War space race, a period of political and social instability in El Salvador, and particularly from NASA’s modules for interstellar exploration and colonization. By positioning the ‘third world’ in a posture of agency rooted in creativity and self-reliance, the artist has conceived a convivial space resonating with key explorations of scale, materiality and technology across the exhibition. A gathering area and resource center, the installation explores how marginalized systems of interaction and value can shape spaces for communal interactions and alternative economies of knowledge.
