Urban indigenous communities in Taiwan have made their homes on the outskirts of cities since a rural exodus over the 1970s and 1980s when many migrated in search of work during the building boom in metropolitan areas. Taiwanese artist Chang En-Man, a member of the Paiwan indigenous nation, describes an uncertain quest on a mountain in the north-east of the island. Arriving in an apparently paradisiacal location in search of a mysterious and abandoned house made of glass, she examines her own place on the mountain and reflects on the struggle of the indigenous residents against the State, which accuses them of illegal occupation and threatens evacuation.
